Acupuncture without needles — the MPS therapy approach

One of the most common questions I hear from new patients is: "I want to try acupuncture, but I'm afraid of needles. Is there anything you can do?"

The answer is yes — and the treatment is often just as effective as traditional needle acupuncture for the right conditions. It's called Microcurrent Point Stimulation, or MPS therapy, and it has become one of the most valuable tools in our practice at Spectrum WellCare in MetroWest Orlando.

What MPS therapy actually is

MPS uses a handheld device that delivers precisely calibrated low-frequency electrical microcurrent to specific acupuncture points, trigger points, and myofascial release points on the body. The current is so gentle that most patients feel only a mild sensation — or sometimes nothing at all.

This is fundamentally different from a TENS unit, which delivers higher-frequency current primarily for pain blocking. MPS operates at frequencies that work on the cellular level — specifically targeting ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production, which drives tissue repair and healing at the cellular level.

From my perspective as a TCM practitioner, MPS achieves something similar to what needles do — stimulating specific points to activate the meridian system, release neurotransmitters, reduce inflammation, and restore the flow of Qi along specific pathways. The mechanism of action is different, but the clinical outcomes are often comparable.

Where MPS therapy actually excels

There are specific applications where I find MPS particularly powerful — sometimes more so than traditional acupuncture:

Scar tissue treatment. This is perhaps MPS's most unique application. Scar tissue from surgery, injury, or burns creates adhesions that restrict movement, impair circulation, and contribute to chronic pain in ways that extend far beyond the scar itself. Traditional acupuncture needles cannot penetrate scar tissue effectively. MPS current moves through scar tissue, breaking down adhesions and restoring normal tissue mobility. I've seen remarkable results in patients with post-surgical scars years old.

Nerve pain and sciatica. The electrical stimulation follows nerve pathways in a way that directly addresses the nerve compression and irritation driving sciatica and neuropathy. Applied along bladder and gallbladder meridians — the primary pathways for sciatic nerve pain — MPS often produces rapid relief that surprises patients who have struggled for months.

Autonomic nervous system regulation. Applied to specific cranial and auricular (ear) points, MPS has a pronounced calming effect on the autonomic nervous system. For patients with anxiety, hypervigilance, or chronic stress — including veterans with PTSD — this application can be profoundly effective.

How I use it in practice at Spectrum WellCare

In clinical practice, I rarely use MPS as a standalone treatment — although it certainly can be. More often, I integrate it with acupuncture to amplify the treatment's effects, or I use it specifically in areas where needle placement is difficult or contraindicated.

For example, in treating a patient with a combination of lower back pain and significant scar tissue from abdominal surgery, I might use traditional acupuncture for the back pain pattern and MPS for the scar tissue work in the same session. The combination addresses both issues simultaneously and often accelerates recovery compared to either modality alone.

For needle-phobic patients, MPS allows me to work through a full acupuncture treatment plan without any needles — maintaining the pattern-based diagnostic approach and targeting the same points, just with a different delivery mechanism.
